Imbrian Arts, goblin set preorder offer

I’m thrilled to share this news about the preorder offer from Imbrian Arts for their forthcoming goblin set.  From their Web site:

Over the past few months I’ve been showing previews of the upcoming goblins set on the Imbrian Arts Facebook page and all over the net. Finally we can all breath a sigh of relief and say it’s about damn time the pre order got put up! The goblin set is now available for pre order and will be released on the 21st of January. As a special thank you to those who pre order a set I’ll include prints of the concept art for the goblin shrike and troll druid. This is the only time they’ll be available and the only way to get them is by pre ordering your goblin set.

The Goblin set contains 10 miniatures, including 9 goblins and a massive troll druid. The goblins race is diverse and strange, with each goblin seeming to be a unique creature and in many circumstances bearing no resemblance to its kin. Among the goblins in this set you’ll find 3 goblin shrikes, 3 goblin footmen, 2 shaggamaws, and a goblin cat eater.

Confrontation 3, cards

I’ve added a page to the Confrontation section featuring links to download the ZIP files containing most of the cards for C3.  These are the same files that were available on the old Rackham Web site.  The files are available in both French and English.

DP Forum, speed painting contest

This was my entry in a recent speed painting contested hosted on the Dragon Painting forum, a Grenadier (Mirliton) goblin.  The sculpt is about 25 years old.  I was in a retro mood.  Enjoy!

I can still remember when I first stumbled upon the sculpting work of Jody Siegel, the creative force behind Imbrian Arts.  Jody was sharing some of his first sculpting endeavors on the Oz Painters forum, and I was immediately amazed by his prodigious talent.  These were his dragon’s teeth skeletons, which were soon followed (I think I have the release order right) by a necromancer, wraith, and more recently a gnoll mercenary.  Since the release of the latter a few months ago, however, things have been seemingly quiet over at Imbrian; but that’s only because Jody’s been busier than ever working on his next release, the remarkable set of goblins featured here.

When Jody and I last spoke, he had to interrupt our discussion to cut the head off of one of these sculpts in preparation for sending them to the caster to have masters made.  If all goes well the production molds will follow shortly thereafter, and we shouldn’t have long to wait until the whole set goes on sale.  I can’t wait.

Trying to access the DP forum…?

UPDATE: The DP forum is now up and operational again.  A huge thanks to everyone who made this possible.

…so am I.  Unfortunately, the site will remain down temporarily while we resolve our subscription with our Web host.  We’re doing everything we can, and hope to have the site restored to normal very soon.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

In the meantime, feel free to try the forum URL or here for updates on the status of the DP forum.

Administrative Update, new company link

I’ve added a link to Romeo Models in the “COMPANIES” link section.  Romeo makes a wide range of fantasy and historical models from 54mm to 90mm, and a great collection of quality display bases.  Be sure to check them out.  One of my favorites is the Gallic Warrior with Carnyx (I Century B.C.) featured here.

Duke of Cadwallon

Duke of Cadwallon

Fantasy Flight Games has just made available for purchase in their online store the “limited edition” Duke of Cadwallon miniature.  The model is plastic and comes pre-painted.  From their Web site:

Bring this figure to the table, and the Duke will no longer stand idly by as thieves rob his royal coffers. Previously available only as a promotional item, the Duke of Cadwallon can now join your collection of pre-painted miniatures for Cadwallon: City of Thieves!

Personally, I plan on rebasing and repainting mine.

You can purchase the duke in their online store ($5.95 US) by clicking on the picture or here.  (Huge thanks to FFG for making this available to everyone who could not attend the conventions where it was sold initially as an exclusive.)

Wyrd, Governor’s Proxy (WIP)

Governor's Proxy, by Wyrd

This is still an early-stage work in progress, but I thought I’d share just in case I can’t finish it before October.  I’m swamped at the moment, and can only touch my paints for about 15 minutes before bed; and very soon I won’t be in a position to paint at all until December.

VOR Blue Man, done

As mentioned in a previous post, I found this model in a bargain bin at a local shop, and purchased it purely to serve as a means to experiment with bold, opaque layers similar to the impasto techniques of the French Impressionists.  After laying down the base coat of paint, however, I became enamored with the “dancerly” pose and contours of the muscles.  This led to a change in plans for the model, and I instead used it to experiment with a skin formula comprised of a deep blue that highlights up to a rosy pink.

Sadly, my troubles with lighting persist, and very little of what I achieved is represented by these photos.  One day I’ll resolve this issue, but likely not until I’m settled in a more permanent residence with space for a small studio tucked away in a corner of the house <fingers crossed>.  In the meantime, I’m enjoying the process of it all.

Warlord Games, firelock musketeer

A finished firelock musketeer from Warlord Games

A month ago I picked up a few back issue magazines at the Panzer Depot, all of which included promotional plastic sprues of various historical miniatures.  The September 2009 issue of Miniature Wargames included a single sample of Warlord Games‘ firelock musketeer.  I promptly assembled and primed the model to have on hand when, on a whim, I felt the need for a break from more serious painting, and to use as a guinea pig for practicing some speed-painting techniques for producing rank-and-file troops purely for gaming purposes.  And so, last night I whipped this guy together, and put on some final touches this evening.

August-September 2010 WIPs, Deathdancer II

I spent some time working on the VOR deathdancer this evening.  My original intent was to use this model as the basis for an experiment in three-tone opaque painting, but in the process I’ve developed a greater appreciation for the sculpt.  I’m using all my powers for this one.  Anyway, here’s an update; this will take longer to finish than planned, hopefully for the better.

War Chest, selling Hybrid and Hybrid: Nemesis

I’ve decided to sell my last “backup” copies of Hybrid and Hybrid: Nemesis in my continued effort to increase funds for the Mannikin Miniatures project.  Both of these are brand new and still in the shrink wrap.  All proceeds from these sales will go toward the production of some miniatures I’m sure many of you will love.  Trust me.  Oh, and the official announcement is just around the corner, and will include pictures of sculpts for the signature range.  Stay tuned.

Administrative Update, banner

I’ve updated the banner for the site.  I’m learning how to use Photoshop at the moment, and fixing the banner for Under the Mountain was at the top of the list.  I’ll likely be tweaking things a bit more, but by and large this represents what I was hoping for the first time around.

Now to fix the footer for my signatures on the forums on frequent.

P.S. I realize the Archive has been neglected for the past several weeks, but want to assure you that I’ll get back to that project as soon as I can.

Finally Finished, Copplestone’s jolly good chap

This is one of the jolly good chaps from Copplestone Castings Back of Beyond Range.  I posted the WIP a year ago, shortly after I started this blog.  The model has been done this whole time, with a very simple paint job (note the varnish sheen).  But I was at a loss about how best to proceed with the base after applying the initial wash layer.

Tonight, while tidying up my table after a painting session, I decided enough was enough: I need to finish this model.  All told I only put another twenty minutes into the piece, and it would have been less if I hadn’t messed up the color for the soil the first time around.  I’m pleased with the results, and need to add those Germans to the list, before my motivation fizzles.

On another note, this was my first experience with the product featured below.  In retrospect, perhaps I should have used the one on the right, and drybrushed the tips with khaki color to suggest drying.  Live and learn.  Oh, love the grass; I have no idea why I waited this long to use it.
