Administrative Update, 27 February 2011

I’ve just added several companies to the appropriate section in the column on the right.  Some of the companies I neglected to add long ago (sorry, Victoria and D. Forge), others are older companies I discovered only recently, many are new.  I’m continually amazed by how many companies there are now–and more are on the way.

Spanish Inquisition (Victoria Miniatures)

Administrative Update, 31 December 2010

I’ve deleted Bat Cave Miniatures and 50 Paces from the list of companies as their respective links are dead.  I’ve added a link to Blight Wheel Miniatures, a sample of whose wares are featured in this post.

VOR Blue Man, done

As mentioned in a previous post, I found this model in a bargain bin at a local shop, and purchased it purely to serve as a means to experiment with bold, opaque layers similar to the impasto techniques of the French Impressionists.  After laying down the base coat of paint, however, I became enamored with the “dancerly” pose and contours of the muscles.  This led to a change in plans for the model, and I instead used it to experiment with a skin formula comprised of a deep blue that highlights up to a rosy pink.

Sadly, my troubles with lighting persist, and very little of what I achieved is represented by these photos.  One day I’ll resolve this issue, but likely not until I’m settled in a more permanent residence with space for a small studio tucked away in a corner of the house <fingers crossed>.  In the meantime, I’m enjoying the process of it all.

August-September 2010 WIPs, Deathdancer II

I spent some time working on the VOR deathdancer this evening.  My original intent was to use this model as the basis for an experiment in three-tone opaque painting, but in the process I’ve developed a greater appreciation for the sculpt.  I’m using all my powers for this one.  Anyway, here’s an update; this will take longer to finish than planned, hopefully for the better.

WIPs, August-September 2010 update 1

A couple photos of my progress on the Deathdancer:

Anakron Miniatures, le Cyclope now available

The Cyclops (sculpted and painted by Anakron)

Anakron Miniatures Studio has just made available for sale the much-anticipated Cyclops model.  You can purchase the model from Anakron’s store by clicking the image above or here.

Phenomenal brushwork, by the way!

Le Cyclope, coming soon from Anakron

Anakron’s latest model, le cyclope (Cyclops), will be available in a few weeks from his store; the model is currently being cast in resin.  This is one of Anakron’s best sculpts to date, I think, and only a preview of the great things he already has in the works.  Be sure to check his Web site regularly for more information.

Administrative Update, 07 July 2010

I’ve added the following links to their respective headings in the column on the right:

Team Frog Studios (COMPANIES)

Miniature Heroes (COMPANIES)

Grey aliens, by Tengu Models

Tengu Models (COMPANIES)

Mad Puppet Miniatures (COMPANIES)

Things have slowed down around here lightly due to an impending international move, but will pick up again once I’m resettled in August.

Predators, miniatures

Robert Rodriguez is at the helm of the latest installment in the Predator series, Predators, which is scheduled for a July 2010 release.  Judging by what I’ve seen in the two trailers, it looks like this will be a good one (finally).

A clip from the Predators trailer

Believing that the immanent release of this film will likely generatre some interest in collecting and painting Predator alien miniatures, I thought I’d take a moment to remind folks of these offerings from Copplestone Castings (28mm) and Khurasan Miniatures (15mm).

Enjoy!  And happy hunting!

EDIT: I’ve added the new European Vacation Alien from Khurasan, Heresy’s Hurn, and a sample of the Inaps by Old Crow (Ainsty) below.  Click on the pictures to visit their corresponding Web sites.

UPDATE: Be sure to check out Mikko’s review of these miniatures on his Web site, Dawn of the Lead: LINK

Woolly Rhino, 1/48 scale

Jodee recently uploaded some pictures of the final version of the 1/48th scale rhino he’s commissioned, and is currently exploring options to get the model cast in resin.  I want two.

For more information see this thread (and about two or three others) at Frothers.

Aragorn MARKS, Brutal

Aragorn's sculpts for the Brutal board game

For those of you who may have missed this, Aragorn Marks has sculpted five limited edition models for Dark Art Miniatures’s new board game, Brutal.  You can find out more about Brutal at the official blog, online store, or the Dark Art Miniatures main Web page.

Otherworld Troll, WIP

This is a WIP of Otherworld Miniature’s Troll I.  I still have some work to do on the face and a few stages of glaze to add, but it’s largely complete.  I’ll fill the seem between the plastic base and scenic base plate with green stuff and putty before finalizing this piece.

One of my favorite miniatures as a child was the troll from the Grenadier Denizens of the Swamp box set, so I was elated when I first discovered the Otherworld trolls (there are two) a while ago.  I have two Troll I and one Troll II models, and look forward to seeing the completed set on my shelf.

Specialist Games, Rumors

Games Workshop's Battle of Five Armies, a personal favorite

Games Workshop's Battle of Five Armies, a personal favorite

I really hope the rumors floating around in various forums (see here, here, and here) about the future and fate of the Specialist Games division are not true.  Time will tell, and soon if word on the street is correct.

I’m thinking seriously about picking up another copy of BoFA.

Forge World Order – Death Korps of Krieg

These are some sample shots of the last part of my Forge World order.  In addition to the 10mm fantasy terrain pieces, I ordered three packs/sets from their Death Korps of Krieg line: Command HQ Squad, Death Riders Squad, and Squad at Ease.  I’m not a fan of GW’s universes, especially 40k; but these models have been tempting me for a long time.

Be sure to click on the photos for larger images.
