MANNIKIN STUDIOS, Grimm’s Owl preview

Mannikin Studios recently posted  a preview of the next model in their fae tree series.  This release is their second fae tree based on Arthur Rackham’s artwork for The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm.

EUREKA, Cú Chulainn

Eureka Miniatures has recently announced release of the Cú Chulainn model for their 28mm Myths range.  From their announcement:

Also forming part of this release is our 28mm figure of legendary Celtic hero Cú Chulainn – a miniature we especially commissioned from sculptor Jody Siegel of Imbrian Arts (check out his excellent figures on his website here). Cú Chulainn is a hero of pre-Christian Irish Mythology and the stories of the Ulster Cycle. A mighty warrior of great renown, he was infamous for his terrible battle frenzies (or ríastrad) which according to the legends were so intense and violent they contorted his human form and temporarily rendered him a monster! Our figure shows Cú Chulainn in dramatic pose, on the brink of ríastrad, about to hurl himself on his enemies. In keeping with Celtic heroic traditions he fights naked (so some parental discretion might be advisable here as far as our younger customers are concerned).

I’ve been looking forward to this release for a long time.  Jody’s always been one of my favorite sculptors, and I think his conception of Cú Chulainn is a brilliant interpretation of the character.  I plan to order the model this weekend, and hope to feature pictures of it here soon.

RED BOX GAMES, October 2011 releases

Red Box Games has made available for preorder their releases for next month, including the two models featured in my last post.  This release includes:

Bruiser Gus, Sleeper in the Alley, Puller of Corks, Cracker of Skulls…..ever needed that hard to find half-orc thug? This is your figure. Big, ugly, dangerous and slightly ridiculous looking he will strike fear into the hearts of any bumpkin unlucky enough to get lost in the Big City back alleys:

The Ever Wonderful Epierre the Entertainer. The perfect Elf bard figure sure to capture the hearts of all the lady adventurers and bewitch the dumb beasts of dungeon, cavern and woodland alike. ALL adventuring parties need an entertainer to lift their spirits in the dark of the dungeon deep, ALL taverns welcome a Dandy entertainer. A great piece for display or gaming you are sure to find a clever use for such a figure:

Herbert Hedgewyrd,  Far Wanderer, Candle in the Shadows, Finder of the Lost Ways, Fox Whisperer, BeeSinger, ThornWalker, Brewer of CherryMead, Friend of the Hill Folk and Keeper of Finiuimgreimclcoh. What adventuring party can’t find a place for a Halfling Illusionist / Mage / Druid??:

Mad Angus The Red Bastard of Blythe’s Cliff, a bloody savage to some, a great hero to others. This is fighter sure to wade into the thick of his enemies and leave a wreck of red ruin in his wake. Foes Beware, he is fearless and a longswordsman without peer:

Hefty Hamish Hillander abroad, graciously in service to his presumed Majesty King Ulbrecht of Aengland. Well known from the tavern to the battlefield Hamish is a stalwart fighting man as loyal to his mates as he is fearsom to his enemies!

Zyrava…………:

And for the first time from RBG, undead:

Finally the encounters range of RBG expands with the initial units of undead. There will be more to come, undead of various danger and type. But this first issue hopes to offer enough to begin populating your crypts and haunted keeps with enough mace fodder for a great little game.

WraithKnights…….. hovering ghostly and malicious these dark summons are sure to prove the mettle of any band of adventurers unfortunate enough to trespass upon their protected ground. ( Stupidly not pictured here, is the two handed weapons sprue that is included with this multipack. 2 longswords, 1 flanged mace, 1 ball mace, 1 battle axe, and 1 hammer. each is universally interchangable – except the two long swords with one particular wraith knight.):

Lesser undead. Animated like marionettes by the ethereal malice of dark magicks teh shambling undead shuffle forward mindlessly to mob and mangle any living creature that draws their attention:

The zombies deserve some special attention. A lot of miniatures companies make zombies, some even specializing in them. Of those, many are of  exceptional quality (Otherworld–see here, here, and here–and Rackham zombies come to mind, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg).  These new zombies from RBG, however, are some of the best I’ve seen.  At what is more, they’re cheap–$8.99US-for-6 cheap!  I got two sets. 😉

Another great release from RBG; I can’t wait for my order to arrive.  Expect to see photos of the models from this release against UtM’s signature ruled background sometime in October.

RED BOX GAMES, new Shireling and Aenglish sculpts

Mad Angus

Tre Manor of Red Box Games previewed two new sculpts, today: The Second of the Hillander mercenaries  Mad Angus (a.k.a. the Bastard of BlythesCliff), the second Hilland mercenary character for the Aenglish faction; and the many-titled Shireling Herbert the HedgeWyrd (Far Wanderer, Candle in the Shadows, Finder of the Lost Ways, Fox Whisperer, BeeSinger, ThornWalker, Brewer of CherryMead, Friend of the Hill Folk and Keeper of Finiuimgreimclcoh).

Herbert the HedgeWyrd

No word yet on when these will be available, but very likely sometime in the coming few months.

This are very high on my list now, as are most things from RBG these days.  Tre’s work gets keeps getting better and better; time and again he demonstrates why he ones of the best sculptors and creative minds in the industry.

For more information, visit the Red Box Games website and online store or feel free to ask Tre questions directly in this thread on Frothers.

REVIEW, Predastore’s Spear Hunter

I’m pretty excited about this post.  Not only does it signal the return of the blue, ruled backdrop that I used for the comparison photos and review articles that helped establish Under the Mountain a few years ago; it’s also on a miniature based in a world I’ve had an interest in since my youth, the predator universe.

Predastore’s limited-edition Spear Hunter (38mm to the top of the head) was sculpted by Rémy Tremblay, one of the most talented sculptors in this industry.   The muscle mass and definition of Rémy’s sculpt suggest a character that is both powerful and lithe, the ideal combination for a hunter that relies largely on physical prowess for pursuing and subduing game.  This is also reflected in the minimal pieces of weaponry and armor, both of which have the perfect degree of detail and wear.  As noted in a Dawn of the Lead article on this model, however, one of the most impressive elements of this model is the netting on the torso.  The attention and care Rémy brought to this sculpt really shine with the netting, which lends this model the right amount of pop.

The Spear Hunter is a successful combination of detail and pose that coalesce to evoke the alien hunters from the first and second films.  The pose, for example, harkens back to the scene in Predator 2 where the alien hunter, after preparing his latest trophy for display, stands atop a skyscraper, raises his spear above his head, and lets out a cry to celebrate his triumph.  And the helmet, netting, and bird skull are obvious references to the alien in the first film.

The cast is a clean render of Rémy’s sculpt, although a small amount of cleaning and prepping will be required (as expected with any resin model).  I’m not sure where this was cast, however; and since I haven’t assembled my model yet, can’t comment in detail on the nature of the resin (that will come later).  For now I can only say that the resin seems to be of high quality.

I have just two critiques about this model.  First, it didn’t come with a base.  I realize this is rather trivial, since anyone who’s been in this hobby long enough likely has a small drawer stuffed with spare bases or will opt to feature the model on a plinth.  That being said, its absence is noticeable.

My second critique is about the head.  Two things don’t seem quite right to me: the dreadlocks and the size of the cranium.  The locks flow too more like hair; and unlike that of the aliens in the films, which are fuller, weightier, and fall straight down, the locks on this model appear to curl under slightly.

The skull is definitely smaller on this model than those of the film aliens.  In the DotL article, the reviewer noted that this model seems a little too thin for a predator.  I disagree, and think this is an optical illusion caused by the more human-sized cranium.

These two very minor issues aside, I’m more than happy with this model.  In my opinion, it’s by far one of the best not-predator models available, and I encourage anyone with an interest in the universe to pick one up while they can (they are limited, after all).  The model is currently available from the Predatore website for about $21.00 US (includes worldwide airmail shipping).

NOTE: For a second opinion on this model, be sure to check out Dawn of the Lead’s review article, which also features the variety of not-predator models currently available from Heresy (Hurn Headtaker), Copplestone Castings (Hunter Aliens), Ainsty (INAPs), and more from Predastore (Bone-Hunter).

PAUL BONNER, a tutorial

A friend of mine recently directed me to a great article by Paul Bonner on painting and the creative process on the Muddy Colors website.  I’ve read the article several times, and it’s already impacting my painting.  I’m currently working on the crow goblin from Imbrian Arts, and when I share pictures in a week or so you’ll likely see some influence from Bonner in my color choices.  At least, I hope that comes through.

Speaking of Mr. Bonner, if you’re not familiar with his work or are already a fan, I can’t recommend his book enough.  Tons of inspiration awaits inside!

ADMINISTRATIVE UPDATE, We’re Back!

The new computer arrived at the end of last week, and I spent a greater part of the weekend restoring my files from the backup of my old computer and configuring things.  Posts will resume as normal this week.  Also, you can expect to start seeing more photos of products taken against an updated version of my old ruled background (see an example here).  First up is an article on two predator models from Predastore.  Watch for it this weekend.

It’s great to be back.  Thanks for your patience!

ADMINISTRATIVE UPDATE, Computer Down II

My new computer has shipped, and is scheduled to arrive sometime next week.  Regular updates to this site will resume the first weekend of September.  Thank you, everyone, for your patience.

ADMINISTRATIVE UPDATE, Computer Down

This is just a quick update to inform readers that updates to the site will resume on or around 29 August.  My computer’s motherboard died last Thursday, and it will take about a week for my new computer to arrive.  Thanks for your patience, and I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.

LEGACY MINIATURES, Flesh Golem Review

LOBO recently published a review and unboxing of the Flesh Golem from Legacy Miniatures on the WAMP website.  He covers all the essential points in his review: packaging, publication, cast quality, resin quality, and overall impression of the model.

If you’re still feeling tempted by this model, but haven’t taken the plunge, LOBO’s review may help with your decision.

At the time of this writing, CMoN still had 100 left (out of a print run of either 200 or 250, I think).  They’re not exactly flying off the shelf, but stock is dwindling.
