AARKLASH ARCHIVE, Kelts of the Drune Clan

The high-resolution image of the Drune army is now available in the Archive.

AARKLASH ARCHIVE, Cynwäll Elves

I just added this high-resolution image to the Cynwäll Elves page in the Aarklash Archive.  I have four more of these, and will upload them over the next few days.

Why is this news worthy?  Click on the image. 😉

CONFRONTATION, Viress Cards Available

The cards for Viress and her weapon bearer, exclusive Cadwallon models for the 2007 Paris GenCon, are now available for download here.  The zip file contains both the French and English cards.

CADWALLON: CITY OF THIEVES, The King of Ashes Expansion

Fantasy Flight recently announced the forthcoming release of the first expansion for their board game based on the Aarklash Universe, Cadwallon: City of Thieves.  From their website:

As you seek to outmaneuver rival guilds, you’ll find many new challenges in the catacombs beneath Cadwallon. Rumored to house the legendary riches of the King of Ashes, these rooms and passageways have piqued the interest of all Cadwallon’s guilds.

The King of Ashes expansion introduces new strategic considerations to the game with its exploration tokens. During set-up, players randomly place exploration tokens alongside the chest tiles in all the district’s rooms, but unlike the chest tokens, these remain facedown [sic] until a thief explores them. Exploration tokens represent the many secrets hidden in the shadows of Cadwallon, including staircases that can lead to the newly-exposed catacombs beneath the city!

This expansion is being produced in partnership with Dust Games and Cyanide Studios.

I own the base game for this series, but have not had a chance to play it yet.  That’s not going to prevent me from snatching up a copy of this expansion once it’s available.  I buy games like this as much for the art and miniatures as I do with the hope that my schedule will allow me to actually play them one day.

Speaking of miniatures, included in this expansion is the third printing of the Mid-nor cyclops.  If you didn’t get one in lead when they were still widely available or are hesitant to invest $79.99 on a resin copy from Legacy (via CMoN), this game presents yet another opportunity to acquire this fine miniature.

RAVAGE MAGAZINE, EN Edition from CMoN

CoolMiniorNot is now distributing the English edition of the French gaming magazine, Ravage.  From their website:

Ravage, the premier French miniatures and table top gaming magazine, is now available in the U.S.A.! The only independent magazine in print catering to the fantasy and science fiction tabletop gamer, each bimonthly issue is chock full of reviews, previews, news, event coverage and painting how tos!

Issue 1 has 69 full color pages, including an exclusive interview with Raphael Guiton on the revival of Confrontation, the legendary fantasy skirmish game!

CONFRONTATION, Phoenix Edition

Confrontation is coming back.  The announcement was made at the Game Manufacturers Association‘s (GAMA) trade show, currently being held in Las Vegas.  The game and all associated products will be licensed by Cyanide Studio, produced by Legacy Miniatures (a division of Dust Studio), and distributed by Cool Mini or Not.

I haven’t seen a huge response to this news yet, and it’s too early to tell how successful this venture will be.  So far my impression is that people are either extremely excited about this announcement or somewhat indifferent.  I never played the game initially, and don’t predict that I’ll start with this new edition.  That’s not because the game doesn’t appeal to me; I just don’t have the time at this stage in my life (maybe again one day).  Consequently, I’m in the indifferent camp.

I’ve also had more than my fill of Confrontation products.  I became a Rackham devotee back in 2003, and have a nearly complete collection (all in storage, sadly).  That being said, I picked up most of the Legacy sets that were released in the past months, and might purchase a few bits and bobbles this year if tempted enough.  I’ll even get the rulebook, assuming they hire a writer worth their salt to edit the volume (someone with a thorough knowledge of composition, grammar, style, and punctuation).  That purchase will be mainly for the art and photos, however, and to satiate my incessant appetite for books.

Some of the most informative tidbits on this incarnation of Confrontation were in a QA with David Preti of Dust/Legacy posted by Almanro on the DragonPainting forum.  I’ve posted this below (with some edits):

Q: Is it a new edition of the C3 manual with the integration of the C3.5 rules?
A: It starts from version 3 and 3.5 with a complete review and refresh

Q: Are there changes (improvements) to C3.5 rules, or will they remain the same as we know?
A: I think there will be changes

Q: If the previous is “yes”, is there the opportunity to propose changes or the project is already closed and tested?
A: The project is not closed and is being tested

Q: Is a print hard copy version planned or only the pdf will be offered on-line? If a hard copy version is planned, which will be the languages?
A: A hard copy of the manual will be available in English and French.

Q: Do you think to re-release all the Confrontation miniature range?
A: No. Of course the miniatures that are too old won’t be re-released

Q: Will there be new miniatures no longer in “limited edition”?
A: There will certain be new miniatures, but not immediately. Be patient!

Q: Will be the cards modified to improve the game dynamics?
A: Yes

Q: What is the expected timing?
A: At Gama previews will be shown of what you will see from now to 6-9 months

Q: Metal or plastic or resin?
A: Resin and Metal

Q: Possible costs?
A: In line with other miniature games (certainly not Legacy prices! Which will remain for the moment for the next few waves)

Q: Is there the possibility to create an official tournament circuit supported by the brand?
A: Yes

LEGACY MINIATURES, Viens voir les miliciens

Haekel & Jaeckel has a great article comparing the recently released (and now sold out) box set of Cadwallon militia from Legacy Miniatures.

The article is in French, but a little wizardry from Google Translate produces sufficient results for non-Francophones.

MASTERS MINIATURES, Orc Ballista on War Beast

Taban Miniatures has just announced the imminent release of the first limited edition resin model for a new range under their distribution, Masters Miniatures.  The Orc Ballista on War Beast was sculpted by Benoît Cosse, and is currently available for preorder exclusively from the the Taban Miniatures website.  Orders are scheduled to ship on 15 January 2012.

The Orc Ballista retails for €150,00 (currently about $191.00 USD), which includes worldwide tracked shipping.

The ballista model is comprised of 14 parts, measures 140mm x 95mm, and comes with a certificate of authenticity.  (Click here for a size comparison of the model care of atacam of the dragonpainting.net forum)

The model featured in these photos was painted by Mohamed “Mohand” ait mehdi.

No doubt some readers recognize this sculpt.  Indeed, many of you have probably coveted this model for years, without any hope of ever being presented with the opportunity to actually own one.

Benoît Cosse sculpted the orc ballista while still a member of the Rackham studio (but this was, according to Taban, more of a personal project than a studio production).  If I recall correctly, the model was supposed to include both Bran-Ô-Kor and Behemoth riders.  It was first previewed at the British Open in April 2006.

The model was originally called the Ulunkor Ballista (Baliste ulunkor), and was based on concept art by Edouard Guiton.

The Confrontation forum was abuzz for a long time about when this model would finally see the light of day.  I asked Jean Bey about it, and he told me personally that it was too complicated of a model and cost ineffective to produce.  “More than the Tarascus,” I asked (that model retailed for $259.00 USD).  “Way more,” he replied.

I don’t put much stock in Jean’s assessment, however (even though he is in a much better position of knowing Rackham’s operational and production costs than me).  Taban, at least, has proven it’s possible to make this model available for much less (although it’s still an expensive model).

I’m on the fence about whether I’ll get one for myself, but am definitely leaning more in one direction than another.

*Images and some information on the original sculpt are from Haekel & Jaeckel.

UPDATE: I found some more images of the original sculpt on my hard drive + a sneak preview of the model from the Rackham Entertainment  forum just before they shut down.

I noticed immediately that the driver is missing his whip, and someone on the DP forum pointed out that the ballista is missing the support frame that secures it to the saddle; the operator is using the ballista like a regular crossbow.

UPDATE 2: After a simple Google search, I was able to track down some more information.  Rackham assigned an SKU to the ballista, and even published its release in at least two official announcements.  I’ve combined the information here (although one announcement had a release date of October):

Ulunkor Ballista (Baliste ulunkor)
ORTI01
1 titan
4 crew, including Bran-Ô-Kor and Behemoth orcs
(Orques du Bran-Ô-Kor et de Béhémoth)
November 2006 France, January 2007 rest of the world

That’s right about the time when Rackham fell apart.  It also explains why this qualifies as a “personal” project for Benoît; he likely never finished the sculpt and never got paid.  But again, I’m not really in a position to know all the details, so please treat everything here as mere speculation.

UPDATE 3: Confirmed by our friends on the WAMP forum:

The Masters Miniatures team got the full production rights for this model.
(Taban is just distributing this range

The original sculpt had never been bought by Rackam to the sculptor who is a friend of some of the MM people
I think that legacy tried to buy-back the model from MM that declined the offer

I called MM to pass your question and they comfirmed that there will only be 300 units ever

LEGACY MINIATURES, Flesh Golem Review

LOBO recently published a review and unboxing of the Flesh Golem from Legacy Miniatures on the WAMP website.  He covers all the essential points in his review: packaging, publication, cast quality, resin quality, and overall impression of the model.

If you’re still feeling tempted by this model, but haven’t taken the plunge, LOBO’s review may help with your decision.

At the time of this writing, CMoN still had 100 left (out of a print run of either 200 or 250, I think).  They’re not exactly flying off the shelf, but stock is dwindling.

LEGACY MINIATURES, Now On Sale

The dust has settled after GenCon 2011, and CMoN has announced that for those of you who, like me, could not attend, the first Legacy Miniatures models are now available from their online store.  The Mid-nor Hydra retails for $119.99 and the Flesh Golem $79.99.  As of this writing, there were 127 Hydras and 175 Golems available; these are limited edition models.

MID-NOR HYDRA, Unboxing

A member on the DragonPainting.net forum, atacam, has just uploaded several photos of the Mid-Nor Hydra from Legacy Miniatures.  According to atacam, “It goes together beautifully, with little to no trimming on certain parts.”

Rumor has it that the next two models from Legacy are the Mid-Nor cyclops and an Acheron character.

AARKLASH ARCHIVE UPDATE, Concept Non Validé

I’ve just added a new page to the Graphica section of the Aarklash Archive titled Concept Non Validé.  Featured in this section are several pieces of rejected concept art for Rackham studios.  These were first made available in Cry Havoc Online.  I have several more similar pieces of concept art from the old CHOs, which I will upload once I decide where best to put them.

LEGACY MINIATURES, Painted Hydra and Flesh Golem

Mid-Nor Hydra

CoolMiniorNot has just released images of the painted versions of Legacy Miniatures’ Mid-Nor Hydra and Flesh Golem.  Both of these models will be for sale at GenCon 2011 (this weekend) and from the CMoN store thereafter.  They are printed in resin and available on a limited basis.

AARKLASH ARCHIVE, Updates Continued, etc.

Worg of the Waxing Moon

I’ve decided to resume updating the Faction/model catalog section of the Aarklash Archive, and have made two sections of the Bibliotheca available to the public again (C3 cards and the Hybrid rules section, the latter featuring a downloadable PDF of the fan rewrite of the Hybrid and Nemesis rules, “Strain SI-ep23 Viral”).

I’ve also finished the first draft of the Wolfen page in the Faction/model catalog section, and will begin revising and updating the entries with more information shortly (concept art, artist, sculptor, etc).  The Cadwallon page, however, will get most of my attention over the coming week, as the second draft has been incomplete for too long.  In the meantime, if you notice any models missing from the Wolfen page, please let me know.

ADMINISTRATIVE, Legacy Miniatures Page

I’ve started a page devoted to Legacy Miniatures releases.  At the moment there is just one entry, the Mid-Nor Hydra, which features photos of the original sculpt and all of the preview images of the final product that have been made public to date.

I’ll add an entry for the flesh golem later today, and others as information and images become available.  If you catch something before I do, by all means, please let me know.

I apologize for the blurry image at the top of this post (it’s the best I have), but found it fitting for an announcement tied to the Legacy project.  This is concept art for the Kelt living legend model on aurochs mount, which had a product code and release date at one time, but Rackham, for whatever reason, chose not to release.  I’ve seen pictures of the aurochs sculpt, but not the rider.  I wonder if Legacy will release this model.  <wink-wink, nudge-nudge>
