VICTORIA MINIATURES, New Store

Victoria Miniatures has updated their website with a new platform for their online store.  From Victoria’s announcement:

I am very pleased to be able to finally have a dedicated online shop for my miniature range. Please take a look around and let me know what improvements could be made. Creating this shop has been a big learning curve so please contact me if you spot any problems.

If you are already a customer of Victoria Miniatures, and are pleased with your minis, please sign up and leave some feedback in the product reviews.

I will continue to add to and update with new images, products and news. All suggestions welcome. Email victoria@internode.on.net or join in the conversation on Facebook

I have always been a fan of Victoria’s Spanish Inquisition and her characters for Labyrintus, which are like haunting vestiges from a juvenile dream.  But it’s her  recently released “conversion bits” and “conversion kits” that have impressed me the most (see Riflemen of the Victorian Guard below for some examples).  I’m definitely getting some of these for my on-again-off-again pulp scifi project.

On another note, entries for Victoria Miniatures and Victoria Lamb have been added to the wiki, which, as of this writing is still just getting off the ground, but will continue to grow as new entries are added daily.  (Do a search for “Alchemists of Dirz,” for example, to see some of what’s been added this week.)

VESPER-ON, June Carnevale Releases

The French Revolution has fascinated me since I first read A Tale of Two Cities (1859) by Charles Dickens years ago.  I’ll never get out of my head the image conjured  when Dickens described the man in the street writing BLOOD on a wall with wine spilt from a merchant’s cask.  That’s another story, however.

Vesper-On’s Carnevale, given its background, has always threatened to pull me in, but until now I’ve been able to resist.  No longer.  I can’t say I’ll ever play the game, but a few of these models are now on my to-buy list.

About this release, Vesper-On wrote:

We want to finish this second Carnevale release showing the family pic with all our new miniatures, to compare dimensions.

The new miniatures will be available from Saturday June 23rt

COPPLESTONE CASTINGS, Jolly Good Chap

This is my second jolly good chap from Copplestone Castings‘ set by the same name (you can see my first jolly good chap here).  I prepped and primed the model three or four years ago, but it sat in a to-do box ever since.  I came upon it again a couple weeks ago while looking for something else.  On a whim I decided to see what kind of results I could get during the short time my son was napping.  This is the result of that painting session, which lasted about two hours.  Simple and effective (but I think I should fill in the wall of grass a little more, and trim back some of the large strands a centimeter or two).

The Jolly Good Chaps set is part of Copplestone Castings’ Back of Beyond and High Adventure catalogs.

Jolly Good Chaps, from the Copplestone Castings catalog (BC10)

Interesting piece of trivia: “back of beyond,” an emphatic phrase used in reference to a location far removed from the world, comes to us from Sir Walter Scott’s The Antiquary (1816):

The laird o’ Tamlowrie and Sir Gilbert Grizzlecleugh and Auld Rossballoh and the Bailie were just setting in to make an afternoon o’t, and you, wi’ some o’ your auld-warld stories, that the mind o’ man canna resist, whirled them to the back o’ beyont to look at the auld Roman camp.

TERCIO CREATIVO, El Padre Calixto

Tercio Creativo have just announced that their latest model, El Padre Calixto, is now available from their website.

Administrative Update, 27 February 2011

I’ve just added several companies to the appropriate section in the column on the right.  Some of the companies I neglected to add long ago (sorry, Victoria and D. Forge), others are older companies I discovered only recently, many are new.  I’m continually amazed by how many companies there are now–and more are on the way.

Warlord Games, firelock musketeer

A finished firelock musketeer from Warlord Games

A month ago I picked up a few back issue magazines at the Panzer Depot, all of which included promotional plastic sprues of various historical miniatures.  The September 2009 issue of Miniature Wargames included a single sample of Warlord Games‘ firelock musketeer.  I promptly assembled and primed the model to have on hand when, on a whim, I felt the need for a break from more serious painting, and to use as a guinea pig for practicing some speed-painting techniques for producing rank-and-file troops purely for gaming purposes.  And so, last night I whipped this guy together, and put on some final touches this evening.

Finally Finished, Copplestone’s jolly good chap

This is one of the jolly good chaps from Copplestone Castings Back of Beyond Range.  I posted the WIP a year ago, shortly after I started this blog.  The model has been done this whole time, with a very simple paint job (note the varnish sheen).  But I was at a loss about how best to proceed with the base after applying the initial wash layer.

Tonight, while tidying up my table after a painting session, I decided enough was enough: I need to finish this model.  All told I only put another twenty minutes into the piece, and it would have been less if I hadn’t messed up the color for the soil the first time around.  I’m pleased with the results, and need to add those Germans to the list, before my motivation fizzles.

On another note, this was my first experience with the product featured below.  In retrospect, perhaps I should have used the one on the right, and drybrushed the tips with khaki color to suggest drying.  Live and learn.  Oh, love the grass; I have no idea why I waited this long to use it.

Administrative Update, 07 July 2010

I’ve added the following links to their respective headings in the column on the right:
